that promotes public health by establishing state-of-the-art standards
to ensure the quality of medicines and other healthcare technologies.
These standards are developed by a unique process of public involvement
and are accepted worldwide.,USP
is a not-for-profit organization
that achieves its goals through the contributions of volunteers
representing pharmacy, medicine, and other health care professions,
as well as science, academia, the U.S. government,
the pharmaceutical
industry, and consumer organizations. The goal of the organization
is to produce the US Pharmacopeia. This dictionary (of sorts)

Food
Chemicals Codex
The
Food Chemicals Codex project is an activity of the Food and
Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, supported by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration. More than 40 years ago, following
the passage of the
Food Additives amendments to the federal
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1958, the Food Protection
Committee
of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences-National
Research Council, received requests from its Industry Liaison
Board and other sources to undertake a project to produce a
Food Chemicals Codex.
The FCC provides standards for the purity of food chemicals
and thus promotes uniform quality and ensures safety in the
use of such chemicals. The FCC has continued to expand and evolve
as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved new food
additives and as advances have been made in scientific and manufacturing
methods and technology.
The
goal of the Committee on Food Chemicals Codex is to define the
quality of food-grade chemicals in terms
of identity, strength,
and purity, based on the elements of safety and good manufacturing
practices.
